The plating comprises galvanic deposition from aq. acid baths contg. a Ni salt, an inorganic acid, and, as glossing agent a new betaine of formula (I). In (I), N = component of a pyridine, or (iso)quinoline ring, opt. carrying 1-2 1-4C alkyl substits.; and R1, R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl. Pref. R1 and/or R2 is 1-4C alkyl if N forms part of a pyridine ring system. A further glossing agent is pref. used, and (I). A BF3 complex of formula (II) is reacted with an alkylene oxide of formula (III) in an organic solvent, at 20-100 deg.C, to give (I). ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in lower concn.
