The device has an optical fibre core (1) covered with a protective inner layer (2) of a flexible synthetic resin and has an openable/closable distal end cover (3) provided at the light emitting end of the device. The inner and outer (4) protective layers are separated by a radial space to maintain flexibility and provide a conduit for pumped gas, used to remove matter from the vicinity of the light emitting end. The openable closable end cover comprises cylindrical parts and a cap portion. It is made of a shape-memory alloy which has a first stable shape eg. closed when below a certain temperature, and a second stable shape eg. open, when above a second temperature value. After insertion in a closed state, a laser (5) is switched on and the incident beam on the interior of the cap raises its temp. and the cap opens. It closes when the laser is switched off.
