The method is for use with a filter (11) for fuel vapours, in the tank vent of an IC engine (1). The enriched scavenging air flow is afterburned. During certain operational conditions of the engine, the air flow is introduced into its exhaust gas cleaning appliance (4). The scavenging air flow is conveyed by a secondary air pump (6), which feeds a secondary air flow into the exhaust system (3), directly, or indirectly. The size of the air flow is regulated dependant upon the oxygen contents in, or upstream of, the exhaust cleaning appliance. ADVANTAGE - Prevents disadvantageous effects on engine.
