The drive comprises wheel driving electric motors (2), each with a stator (10) and rotor (12). The latter is coupled to the vehicle wheel (30) by a drive with a drive stage (32,44) fitted within the rim (34) of the vehicle wheel. Pref. the drive stage is of the type with a pinion and a hollow wheel. Alternately an epicyclic stage may be used. The electric motor may be also fitted within the wheel rim, and the rotor of the electric motor may be fitted to a component of the drive stage. The rotor of the electric motor can be coupled to the stage pinion (32) by an articulated shaft (26) only.
