To operate the coke oven, a sequence of work numbers is allotted to the chambers, indicating the course of the work and including the repetition of an operational step. The system includes a working step for carrying out the working units, following an order of work numbers related to the coking chambers, so that there is no interruption of working time between the oven working units. Also included is an interruption step for the interruption of the oven working unit until the chamber concerned reaches the time at which the discharge from the chamber is possible. A variant provides for checking and repairing means for the whole oven during the interruptions. USE/ADVANTAGE - This method saves both time and the amt. of heat necessary. Variation in coking time is minimised, loss of prodn. due to repair work is minimised therefore working rate and prodn. is increased, and oven life is lengthened.
