Apparatus for automatically filled welding a rectangular bottom plate to four vertical side plates comprises a carriage (5) moveable on the bottom plate parallel to four side plates having a pair of wheels (7,7') each with its own travel motor (6,6') and a pair of casters (8,8'); a rod (9) having an electromagnet (10) which can be moved vertically (11) to attach itself to the bottom plate and act as central axis as the carriage changes its rotational position; a welding head (12) with X and Y-axis profiling mechanisms (15, 16) to ensure that the centre axis of nozzle intersects the weld line and the gap between weld wire tip and weld line remains constant; a carriage position detection mechanism (17) for measuring rotational change with respect to home position; front (18) and back (19,19') sensors to detect position of carriage from side plate perpendicular to travelling direction of carriage; and welding controller.
