Pocket-size device for checking the genuineness or authenticity of a value document having at least one pigment section which is able to respond to electromagnetic radiation characteristic therefor, said device comprising means for at least partially exposing the value document to said characteristic electromagnetic radiation (preferably electromagnetic radiation from the ultraviolet wavelength range), said means being preferably formed, at least largely, by a standard light source, a reflector and a filter for transmitting only, or at least virtually only, electromagnetic radiation from the ultraviolet wavelength range.
