The invention relates to a process for the desulphurization of a discharge gas by bringing the discharge gas into contact with an absorbent sludge, in which the sulphur dioxide contained in the discharge gas is absorbed; adjustment of the pH value in the absorbent sludge to 4.0-5.5; circulation of the absorbent sludge, in which [lacuna] is present in a quantity which relates to the quantity of absorbable waste gas or to its sulphur oxide content; feeding-in of air into the absorbent sludge, the quantity of air being at least twice as great as the theoretical quantity of air which is required for oxidation of the sulphur oxide compound, for agitation of the absorbent sludge; and removal of part of the sulphur dioxide contained in the absorbent sludge. <IMAGE>
