The inflation system is for a crash safety air bag in a vehicle. It has a container (14) with a chamber (16) holding a gas mixture (18) consisting of a propellant gas (hydrogen), an oxidation gas (oxygen) and an inert gas (nitrogen or argon or a mixt. of both). An igniter (24) responsive to sudden vehicle deceleration ignites the gas mixture causing the end wall (28) of the container to break and allow the flow of warm gas into the air bag (12). USE/ADVANTAGE - Crash safety air bag system for a vehicle has an inflation rate controllable by the adjustment of the gas mixture composition.
