The capstan drive has a pair of rubber press rollers (12, 14) supported by respective lever arms (16, 18) and a pair of associated capstan shafts (24, 26). Each lever arm (16, 18) is acted on by a spring (20, 22) biasing the press roller (12, 14) into contact with the capstan shaft (24, 26) and selectively displaced against the spring bias to release the roller (12, 14) from the capstan shaft (24, 26) via a drive switching control (28, 40). The latter uses a 2-armed release element (28) controlled via a rotary switch wheel (40) and adopts a neutral position when the voltage supply is disconnected, in which both rollers (12, 14) are released from their respective capstan shafts (24, 26).
