The member is preferably heated (16) to evaporate a substantial portion of the carrier liquid of the ink so as to reduce wicking in the final substrate (18). In one embodiment of the printer a layer of resin is deposited on the surface (14) of the member (12) before the deposition of the image. This layer is transferred to the substrate with the image and protects the image and optionally improves its bonding to the substrate (18).
