A position sensor (16) is incorporated in a diaphragm metering pump to indicate the relative position of the diaphragm during flexure. When excessive extension of the diaphragm is sensed by the position sensor, a control valve (31) will provide hydraulic fluid from a reservoir (34) for inhibiting further deflection of the diaphragm in the direction in which it was moving. Diaphragm life is extended as well as the accuracy of metering provided by the pump maintained.
