A liquid crystal display element has a driving cell (2) which is vertically oriented on the upper part of a polarizing plate (1), a compensating cell (3) which is horizontally oriented, and color filters (4a,4b,4c,4d) which are placed face to face with the upper polarizing plate (5) on the upper part of the compensating cell (3) . Thus the light passing through the color filters (4a,4b,4c,4d) turns colored as the vertically oriented cell and the horizontally oriented cell are displayed.
