Disclosed is a process for preparing porous fibers, filaments or strands of an olefin polymer having side-groups reactable with a reagent at a temperature below that at which thermal stess-relaxation of the oriented molecules is substantially encountered, said process comprising the steps of (a) treating the orientable olefin polymer with a chemical reagent which reacts with said reactive groups, thereby swelling the polymer while keeping the temperature below the thermal stress-relaxation temperature, (b) applying a shearing or crushing force to the so-swelled polymer so as to cause fibrillation of the polymer into separable parts, characterized in that said polymer is a polymer oriented at a temperature below that at which stess-relaxation is substantially encountered. The product of the present invention can be used in preparing woven materials or wrapping on a filter mandrel. The products provide benefits not found in ordinary melt-spun blown fiber because of the presence of fibrils along the surfaces. 32,486-F |
