The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for improved functioning of a heating furnace 1 for semi- finished metal products 3. The elongated heating furnace 1 comprises arrangements 4, such as water-cooled transport rails, for example, for transporting the semi- finished metal products 3 through the heating furnace 1, and at least one burner 10, which uses fossil fuel in order to heat up the semi-finished metal products 3. The heating furnace 1 comprises a convection zone 6, in which the semi-finished metal products 3 are heated largely by the convected heated in flue gases that are ducted through the zone, and a heating zone 8, in which the semi- finished metal products 3 are heated largely by the radiant heat form a burner 10 located there. The semi- finished metal products 3 are additionally heated by at least one radiant heater 5, which is situated at a separate location in the longitudinal direction of the heating furnace 1 from the said burner 10 with the aim of reducing the temperature differences in the thickness direction that occur in the semi-finished metal products 3 in the heating furnace and/or in order to increase the capacity of the heating furnace. <IMAGE>
