The process for automatic characterisation of the seabed performs a structural analysis of video image sequences of the bed so as to determine to which predetermined types of images the video images belong, - by preprocessing (1) the numerical values of brightness; - detecting structures (2) defined by lines projecting from the bed, by detecting and shrinking the contours; - modelling (3) the detected contours by model segments; - and characterising (4) the images by tests on parameters picked from the number, the length, the distribution of lengths and the orientations of the segments modelling the contours. The invention applies in particular to undersea ray-tracing. <IMAGE>
