The invention relates to an exhaust system silencer for a motor vehicle, made up of two half-shells enclosing internal elements for absorption of noise (sound) or for filtering exhaust gases, these elements comprising a tubular inlet fitting and a tubular outlet fitting emerging from the silencer through openings defined at the joining plane (parting line) of the two assembled half-shells. This silencer is characterised in that it is composed, in particular, of means (22) for longitudinally and angularly positioning the tubular inlet and outlet fittings (8, 9) inside the said openings (10, 11). <IMAGE>
