This system of bidirectional transmission, especially by optical fibre, between a terminal called the source terminal and a terminal called the user terminal, with a single carrier for both transmission directions, originating from a source located in the source terminal, includes, for each transmission direction, means of modulating one of the parameters of the said carrier, this parameter being different for the two directions, with an exception in the case of the intensity when it can be the same, and, in every case, with the condition that if the modulation applied first, i.e. for transmission from the source terminal to the user terminal, is intensity modulation, it is done with a modulation ratio which is sufficiently low always to leave some power on which the modulation applied second, i.e. for transmission from the user terminal to the source terminal can operate. <IMAGE>
