New (hetero)aryl arylidene-coumarin cpds. - used for dyeing and printing of natural or synthetic material, pigmenting plastics and in thermal transfer printing

The claims cover: (1) The use of 6-(het)arylidene-coumarin cpds. (IA) of the formula (I) in dyeing and printing natural and synthetic materials; and (2) New 6-(het)arylidene-coumarin cpds. (IB) of formula (I) with specified substits.: R1-2 independently = (substd.) aryl or (substd.) opt. anellated hetaryl and R2 may also = (substd.) alkyl; R3 = (substd.) aryl, (substd.) opt. anellated hetaryl, (substd.) alk(en)yl, CN, -CO-O-alkyl or -CO-O-aryl; R4-6 independently = H or (IA) a substit. of the usual type in dyestuff chemistry or (IB) a substit.; any 2 adjacent gps. R1/R2, R2/R6, R1/R4, R4/R5 or R3/R5 with the C atoms to which they are attached may = a (substd.) 5- or 6-membered satd. or unsatd. carbocycle. (IB) exclude 6-diphenylmethylene-3-phenyl-coumarin (IC) (R1=R2=R3=Ph, R4=R5=R6=H); 6-diphenylmethylene-3-coumarin (R1=R2=Ph, R3=Me, R4=R5=R6=H); and 5-diphenylmethylene -1-phenyl-1,2-dihydro -naphtho(2,1-b)furan-2-one (R1=R2=R3=Ph; R4/R5 complete an anellated benzene ring, R6 = H). (I) can be prepd. (not claimed) by the method described in e.g. JACS 1955, 77, 973. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are claimed for dyeing and printing cellulose acetate and polyester; for bulk pigmentation of plastics; in thermal transfer from a carrier using a thermal head; and as transfer dyestuff in thermal transfer-donor material. They are suitable for dyeing and printing cellulose acetate and triacetate, polyamides, e.g. polyamide 6,6, aromatic polyesters, e.g. PET, and mixed textiles, e.g. of polyesters with cellulose or wool, giving good to excellent fastness; and for pigmenting e.g. polystyrene, PVC, polymethacrylate and styrene/acrylonitrile, styrene/butadiene or styrene/alpha-methylstyrene copolymers.
