Liq. crystal-resin composites with low resin content - by mixing resin with thermoplastic matrix resin, melt-extruding to raw composite, adding more matrix resin and injection moulding the mixt.

A process for moulding a liq. crystal (LC)-resin composite (i) with a thermoplastic resin matrix (II) and a LC resin (III) with LC transition pt. (TT) above the distortion temp. (TD) or m.pt. (TM) of (II) as reinforcing material involves (i) mixing (II) with (III) in a mix ratio within the fibre-forming range or a fibre-forming range below the phase-reversal range, (ii) melt-extruding the mixt. at temp. TD (below TT) to give a formable raw composite (IV) contg. fibres of (III), and (iii) moulding a mixt. of a matrix resin and (IV) with mix ratio below the (pref.) fibre-forming range. Also claimed is a process for reforming (I) with LC resin content below the (pref.) fibre-forming range, by (iv) mixing the used composite with a predetermined amt. of (III) to give a mix ratio in the fibre-forming range, (v) melt-extruding the mixt. (with TD or TM below TT) to give a formable composite with LCP fibres, and (vi) moulding a mixt. as in (iii). USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables the prodn. or recycling of high-strength composites with LCP fibres dispersed in a matrix resin, even if the LCP content is below the fibre-forming range.
