The telephone exchange has a housing with a flat base plate (11), enclosing a pair of circuit boards (15,22), each lying parallel to the base plate. The components mounted on each circuit board (15,22) face inwards towards one another. The upper circuit board (22) is supported by the lower circuit board (15), with releasable electrical connections between them provided by cooperating plug and socket elements (17,27) mounted on the two boards. Pref. the upper circuit board has alternate circuit configurations, selected depending on the required function of the telephone exchange. ADVANTAGE - compact.
