The cooling system for an IC engine in an automobile contains a mechanical coolant pump (22) driven by the engine (10) and an electric coolant pump (23), which is switched into operation in dependence on the monitored engine operating parameters to supplement the basic output of the mechanical pump (22). A heat exchanger (16), acting as a radiator in a first section (15) of the coolant circuit, has a variable cooling capacity controlled by a radiator shutter (36) and an electric fan (37). A second heat exchanger (20) in a second section (19) of the coolant circuit provides heating of the passenger space for further engine cooling. Pref. the switching in the fan is supervised by a microprocessor switching control (24).
