The car roof locking mechanism has a swivel lever on a longitudinal axis at the roof edge. The lever (20) has a guide face engaging a roller (17) at the windscreen frame and moves from the free position, with the guide face to the side of the roller below the latter on engagement. The axes of rotation of lever and roller are in a common vertical plane, with that of the lever uppermost and pulled down on engagement in this plane. A part of the guide face, bearing against the roller, is at right angles to this plane in the engaged position.
