The servo motor (13) is connected to the steering linkage (6) by an electro-magnetic clutch (14). To reduce the noise and shock of a step form clutch action, the operating current of the clutch is varied to provide a progressive clutch action, inversely proportional to road speed. The motor current can also be controlled similarly. Below a set speed full servo drive is generated. Between this speed and an upper set speed the servo effect is progressively reduced, while above the second speed no servo effect or a constant limited servo effect is generated. ADVANTAGE - Improved steering control, improved handling, quieter operation.
