<p>A valve assembly, for use as a water tap, having a valve seat 17 located in a passageway between a fluid inlet 15 and a fluid outlet 16 and also having an axially recessed spindle 18 moveable toward and away from the valve seat, comprises a resiliently deformable spherical sealing member 11, a plunger member 10 for moving the sealing member against the valve seat, the plunger member including a stem 14 located within the spindle recess, and a helical spring 12 which extends between the valve seat and a portion of the tap through which the spindle extends. A low-friction plastics mesh lining may be arranged within the spring 12 to facilitate rotation of the sealing member in the water flow when the valve is open.
