The invention relates to a process for the preparation of tetrazole derivatives, which are antihypercholesterolaemic agents, of the formula IIa or IIb <IMAGE> <IMAGE> wherein R1 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy or trifluoromethyl; R2, R3, R5 and R6 are hydrogen, halogen, C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy; and R7 is hydrogen, a hydrolyzing ester group or pharmaceutically acceptable cation. The invention relates further to tetrazole derivatives, which are useful intermediates for the preparation of the compounds of the formula IIa or IIb, and to the process for the preparation thereof.
