A ring seal (10) having a continuous circumferential outside diameter seal dams (16) on the high pressure side of the ring seal (10). The seal dam (16) is aerodynamically connected to a low pressure side of the ring seal (10) by axial vents (27). A plurality of upstream face vents (38) on the high pressure side (22) of he ring seal (10) are aerodynamically connected to corresponding upstream transverse sealing dam (18). A plurality of downstream face vents (32) on the low pressure side (29) of the ring seal (10) are aerodynamically connected to corresponding downstream transverse sealing dam (30). The upstream and downstream face vents (28,32) serve to reduce an axial force exerted against the ring seal (10) and the outside diameter vents (27) which are aerodynamically coupled to the outside diameter seal dams (16) serve to increase a radial force which pushes the ring seal (10) against a stationary outer seat (12) causing the ring seal (10) to maintain a desired fixed position. <IMAGE>
