A flame retardant consisting of a finely divided powder comprising ammonium sulfate and, 0.1 to 10.0% by weight, based on the weight of ammonium sulfate, of at least one fatty acid salt of aluminum. The flame retardant is in a finely divided form and less liable to self-agglomeration, has high water resistance and is less liable to coloration at the time of kneading.
