In order to recycle cathode-ray tubes, in particular display tubes, any coatings present must be removed from the glass parts or glass body. Such coatings consist basically of carbon, poly(vinyl acetate), metals, other non-metals and phosphorescent compounds. To strip these coatings off the glass parts or glass body of the tube, the tube is placed in an alkaline solution containing surface-active agents and the glass parts exposed to ultra-sonic radiation while in the solution.
