PURPOSE:To shield the scattered light of grid-shaped spacings and the picture element parts of an off state and to obtain the bright black color and high contrast by forming light shielding layers facing the grid-shaped spacings of the transparent electrodes on an inlet side on a glass substrate on an exit side. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted by providing the light shielding layers in the regions of the grid-shaped spacings exclusive of the effective picture element parts on the glass substrate on the exit side. Namely, the light shielding layers 6 consisting of Cr/Cr oxide layers of, for example, 200mm film thickness are formed in the regions facing the grid-shaped spacings 4a of the transparent electrodes 4 of the glass substrate 2 facing the glass substrate 1 under the transparent electrodes 3 thereof. The effective picture element parts consist of picture elements of 50mum square in such a manner. The contrast of about 60 heretofore is improved to 100 and is greatly upgraded in the case of the size of the transparent electrodes 4 being 40mum square. The scattered light of the liquid crystal layer of the effective picture elements in the off state and the grid-shaped spacings 4a is shielded by the light shielding layers and is not emitted and, therefore, the bright black color and high contrast are obtd. and particularly the effect of high-density picture elements is high. |
