Assembly to feed a sliver to the spinning unit of a rotor spinner has a carrier structure, moving along a given path under a motor drive, with a gripper (9) moving between a gripping and an insertion position. Two motor-driven prongs (92, 93) grip the pointed (1) end of the sliver and insert it into the compression unit (31) at the spinner 93). Pref. the carrier structure has a swin linear motor (4) with a further linear motor (7) fixed to the push rod (41). Push rod (74) of the second motor (7) is coupled to the gripper (9). Ends of the prongs (92, 93) are flattened and shaped to an acute angle. Length of the angled sections of the prongs (92, 93), where the pointed end (1) of the sliver is clamped, is less than the width of an opening in a support carrier. Gripper (9) with its prongs (92, 93) is on a swing mounting (73) at the housing of the second linear motor (7) for the prongs (92, 93) to be inserted coaxially into the compression unit (31). Carrier structure is mounted to a mobile maintenance unit (6) which travels along the line of spinning stations. ADVANTAGE - Simple and reliable transfer of a shaped sliver end into a given spinning station.
