A lock for a door or window is actuated by a toothed rack (24) which engages the teeth of a pinion (22). The pinion (22) is mounted in a housing (16) which is fastened to the frame of the door or window and the pinion is rotated by a handle. The housing (16) forms a guide for the toothed rack which is connected at its upper and lower ends to the lock actuating rods. The pinion teeth project through a slot with a rebated edge in the side of the housing (16) in order to engage the toothed rack (24).
