<p>An image reader including polarizing plates disposed between an illumination device and an original and between the original and a photoelectric conversion element. An output beam (L1) of the illumination device (1) is polarized by a first polarizing plate (2) in an X direction, passes through a half mirror (4) and is incident vertically into the original (20). A second polarizing plate (3) having a polarization direction thereof in a Z direction removes the specular reflection of a beam (L3) incident to the original (20) and guides only diffused reflection to a (CCD) (7) through a variable stop (61). In this way, it is possible to prevent insufficiency of an illumination light quantity due to float of the original (20), and to obtain an image reader having high illumination efficiency.</p> |
