In processing a contaminated sludge/waer mixt., partic. contaminated with organic impurities and/or heavy metals, (a) the particles in the mixt. are subjected to treatment which confers clear charge properties, (b) a flocculant is added to promote flocculation, and (c) the flocculated mass is dewatered by appln. of pressure.
