The method involves measuring and evaluating outputs from probes (10,8) in e.g. exhaust manifolds (9) and individual cylinders (2-7) of an internal combustion engine w.r.t. permissible values. The probes are wired to an electronic signal processor (11). For each operating point of the engine (1) the measured pressure (8) is compared with a characteristic. If significant deviation is detected, cylinder-selective engine protective measures are taken before the same process is applied to lambda measurements (10) leading to overall or selective protection. USE/ADVANTAGE - For e.g. lambda probes, pressure transducers and accelerometers. Reliable detection of misfiring is guaranteed by inexpensive electronic appts.
