The lever (10) is formed by a rod (11) comprising at one of its ends means (11b) of fixing a part (12) by which the driver can grip the lever and at its opposite end means (13) of linking the lever to an element for transmitting movement to the gearbox. Between its two ends the rod (11) carries a pivot (16) for guiding and holding the lever on the floor of the vehicle. The entire lever is made in monobloc form and comprises a single piece of thermoplastic material. The rod (11) of the lever may preferably be composed of a glass fibre reinforced polyamide. The lever (10) may be manufactured by an injection moulding process in a single operation. Some parts of the lever may be made of a different plastic material from the plastic material forming the rod (11) by a twin injection moulding process.
