The IC engine has a fixed cylinder (1) which is closed at both ends and houses a reciprocating piston (2). The lower region (4) of the cylinder (1) which lies below the piston (2) is continuously supplied with compressed combustible gas through a non-return valve (5). The compressed combustible gas is supplied from a compressor or other suitable source. The downward movement of the piston drives the compressed gas through a non-return valve (6) which is installed in the piston crown. After flowing into the upper chamber the gas is ignited and drives the piston downwards. The piston is connected to a mechanism which converts its reciprocating motion into rotary motion.
