A polyacid polyanhydride is used as a bleach activator especially for improving low temperature bleaching performance of peroxygen bleaches such as hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, in laundry and other detergent formulations. The polyanhydrides are preferably made from polybasic, usually dibasic, carboxylic acids, which may be aliphatic and/or aromatic in nature. The polyanhydride may be a homopolymer or a copolymer and has at least 2 monomer units on average per chain. The polyanhydride is preferably made by reacting the free dibasic acids with excess acetic anhydride and refluxing until the desired molecular weight is achieved followed by removal of acetic acid formed and excess acetic anhydride. Examples of polyanhydrides are polymers of sebacic, adipic, azelaic, succinic, fumaric, iso- and per-phtalic and citric acids. The polyanhydrides are solids which are easy to handle, relatively storage stable and give bleach activation.
|
