(A) Removal of a substance at or above the ground water surface (10) in soil involves producing a protective gas atmos. above the substance and maintaining this atmos. throughout removal of the substance from the soil. Pref. the substance is removed by creating a pressure difference (P2-P3) to cause migration of the substance from the soil region (4) to a collection point (7) in the soil, while the protective atmos. is created and maintained by one or more injection lances (5). (B) Also claimed are arrangements for carrying out the process and use of the process for removing oil products. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for removal, from non-aquifers, of crude oil, refinery products, organo-halogens and similar organic cpds., cyanides, etc. The protective atmos. prevents outgassing of toxic, carcinogenic and/or explosive substances from the soil.
