The appts. includes a five-axis positioning table (11) on which the unit under test (20) is rotated (18) and translated (16) by a controller (14) linked to a joystick (12). The unit (20) is oriented to the optical axes of two video cameras (23,24) scanning the same field of view under different lighting conditions. Dim lighting (22) illuminates pref. non-planar and non-vertical surfaces, and brighter lighting (32) pref. the relatively plane surfaces. USE/ADVANTAGE - For e.g. solder connections on surface-mount printed circuit boards. Inspection for faults of all types prescribed in Section 4.4 of MIL-STD-2000A is possible.
