The two computers or calculators are connected with one another through an internal data channel and each is connected through an external data channel with an external data source, each having at its disposal a system capable of many working modes. A monitoring or diagnosing unit can switch both computers alternately into an active or passive condition. The passive computer is prepared for loading and the new software taken from the data source into the memory of the active computer and then, from there, into the memory of the passive computer. The new program is started and, if there are no faults, the passive computer is switched to the active condition, while the other computer becomes passive. The previous steps are now repeated, while in the case of a fault there is no switching over. It has to be decided here whether to repeat the initial steps or return to the old software. USE/ADVANTAGE - Communications systems. Software can be changed in inexpensive way without interrupting running operation. Faulty loading process or loading of invalid or non-applicable new software does not lead to system failure.
