The anaesthetic 2-(difluoromethoxy)-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane is prepared by reacting 2-(difluoromethoxy)-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane (isoflurane) with bromine trifluoride, the reaction being conducted by adding the isoflurane to the bromine trifluoride over a period of hours at a temperature in the range 5 to 50 DEG C. High yields of product and conversions of the isoflurane are obtained. |
