The IC engine has a return duct with a solenoid valve to regulate the level of exhaust gas recycling to the inlet manifold (3). A controller monitors the engine performance before the alteration in exhaust return and the effect of the alteration. The engine performance is compared with reference values to determine if the return system is operating correctly. The engine monitoring is in set intervals and is inhibited during rapid changes in performance to eliminate transient effects. The inlet manifold has a sensor (8) for the throttle (7) setting, a pressure sensor (6) and an injector jet (5) - all linked to the controller (19). ADVANTAGE - Self analysing control system; reduced emission products.
