A security document, such as share certificate, banknote or the like, comprises an embedded safety filament. The filament is of transparent material, esp. plastics, and comprises a printed image (c, b, a) and, at a distance from this image, a shaped outer face (4) acting as a lens for viewing the image. From different viewing angles, different regions of the image are seen and the arrangement is such that the image has a different appearance when viewed from different angles. In one embodiment the surface (4) has the form of a series of cylindrical lenses. In a variant, the structure is partly transparent so that a grating effect is seen. The filament pref. has a rectangular cross-section and the lens face is on the opposite side from the face carrying the image.
