A novel polymer comprises a sulphomaleic anhydride adduct or sulphoester maleic anhydride adduct with an unsatd. hydrocarbon polymer. The sulphonic acid gps. of the sulphonmaleic anhydride adduct with the unsatd. polymer may be neutralised with a metal counterion to form an ionomeric thermoplastic elastomer. The counterion is Fe, Al, Pb or Gp IA, IIA, IB or IIB element. Alternatively, the sulphonic acid gps. are neutralised with NH3 or an org. amine. A polymer comprising an adduct of a sulphomaleic anhydride deriv. or isomer is also claimed. The unsatd. hydrocarbon polymer is an EP terpolymer, EP copolymer, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, polybutadiene, SBR, styrene-isoprene random and block copolymers, polypropylene, polyisobutylene, propylene- or ethylene copolymers. The sulphomaleic deriv. or isomer is halosulphonyl maleic anhydride, alkoxy sulphonyl maleic anhydride or beta-sulphoacrylic anhydride.
