The wiper arms, and the wiper blade assemblies, are located inside a long profile cassette (3) whose upper surface is normally flush with the vehicle body under the windscreen. The cassette is extended outwards to enable the wipers to sweep over the windscreen. The actual drive mechanism (10) remains fixed in position, with the drive force transmitted by extending drives (12). A simple interlock disconnects the wiper drive when retracted. For intervals wiping the cassette remains in the operating position. The cassette has a throughflow of air when extended to prevent wind turbulence. Electric heaters prevent the system freezing in the retracted position. ADVANTAGE - Low wind noise when retracted; fully protected storage position for wipers.
