The invention concerns a method and a device for cutting off the power supply to an electrical load L, such as an electric cooker. By means of the method the power supply I to the load L is cut off by a connection device 1 controlled by a time sensor 5 based on a certain pre-set time. According to the invention in the method the passage of the current I, Iv to the load is detected using a current transformer 2, the time sensor 5 is started when the power supply I commences and the power supply is cut off by opening the connection device 1, k1 after a certain predetermined time; to check that disconnection has taken place correctly, the passage of leakage current Iv after the supply of the load current I has been cut off is detected via a shunt circuit 9 arranged in parallel with the connection device 1; and after the disconnection the connection device 1 is closed in order to permit normal power supply to the load. <IMAGE>
