A movable driving means (1, 2, 9) is moved by a user in the course of exercising. The driving means is connected to a force applying means (7, 8, 15) via a gearing-up means (3, 5, 13). A spring (7) provides a resistance to at least part of the motion of the gearing up means (3, 5, 13), so that for a single stroke of the driving means (1, 2, 9), the spring (7) is compressed and extended many times. Because of the gearing effect the spring (7) need only be relatively weak, and the pulsed resistance is of high enough frequency to seem relatively smooth. <IMAGE>
