A macroscopic and microscopic video record of whole core is stored by translating the core in increments adjacent a video recording station. The core is stopped and movement damped prior to storing the video record for each increment. Overlapping or contiguous macroviews are made using a video camera and in the center of each macroview a microview is also video recorded. The video records are stored in a random access video memory and are retrievable by depth.
