PURPOSE:To prepare the titled polymer having high stereospecificity and sharp particle size distributuion, by the use of a highly active polymerization catalyst composed of a solid component obtained by contacting metallic magnesium, a halogenated hydrocarbon, and a specific organic compound, a titanium compound and an electron-donative compound. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin is polymerized using a polymerization catalyst obtained by mixing (A) a magnesium-containing solid prepared by contacting (a) metallic magnesium, (b) a halogenated hydrocarbon of formula I (R is 1-20C hydrocarbon; X is halogen atom), e.g. n-butyl chloride, and (c) a compound of formula II (X' is H, halogen or 1-10C hydrocarbon; R' is 1-20C hydrocarbon; m is 0, 1 or 2), e.g. an orthoformic acid ester, (B) a titanium compound, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, and (C) an electron-donative compound, e.g. ethyl benzoate.
